Any Truth Left
By John Herlihy

We sometimes wonder if there is any truth left;
We live now in a world that prides itself on theft.
We steal from the clouds the mystery of its thunder,
Even the rainbow now dissected, losing its wonder.
We plunder the earth, hoping to reach its inner core,
Now polluted beyond measure, pristine not any more.
The twinkle of stars reduced to neurons in the night;
The ruined moon a pale image in its borrowed light.
The physical world called atoms that we can fathom.
Why wrestle with ancient myths? Who needs Adam?
Truth has adopted a dress that we hardly recognize;
We move mountains, drain lakes, progress improvise.
Relativity and quantum physics dazzle their elegance;
Their complexity tempts us far from divine providence.
We now build glass empires that reach to the clouds,
Without realizing their capacity to wrap us in shrouds.
As for who we really are, forget mentioning the soul;
The breath of wind of spirit refuses to make us whole.
Broken, abandoned, and forsaken as a battered bride,
We may feel astonished to find ourselves cast aside.

I FIND PURE, UNADULTERATED TRUTH IN THE WORD OF GOD...AND TRUTHFULLY, THAT IS THE 'ONLY' PLACE. SAD STATE THIS WORLD IS IN, THANK GOD IT'S NOT AS LONG AS IT HAS BEEN. A FINE WORK, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS.

The truth is still out there, you just need to find it, or as they say, believe half of what you see, half of what you read, and half of what what you hear. And the truth is, this is an excellent poem.

Astonished I won't be as I have thought it is coming eventually for a long time because truth does no longer exist though I try to be so everyday, even I sometimes find I must lie to get through a given day, bad karma I know but it is what it is...-e-

It is so true that we go to science and the scientific method to determine the truth. And it is true that many of the ideals and their accompanying behaviors based on timeworn myths and legends, are being unraveled by the use of science and truth seekers. I find that refreshing. Many, like you, and some of the commenters, find it disturbing.

I don't know what the consensus Mohammed is, because I have not read anything about this man to make him real or not. But there is substantial evidence being gathered that Jesus Christ, while modeled after a man, may never have existed. Some are finding that he may have been written into the New Testament by Romans seeking a way to give the unruly Jews the Savior they always hoped for. Adam, as well as other figures in the Old Testament, are also probably more metaphoric than real.

All one has to do is take a look at the lives of Galileo and Copernicus, to find out how vicious and cruel believers in the old ways are to new scientific thought and discovery. Neil Armstrong brought back moon rocks, but no cheese.

Oh, I believe there is a lot of truth left in this world. The truth of a songbird, the truth of a newly blooming rose, the truth in the laughter of a child...........to mention a few. "And we all shine on like the moon and the stars and the sun........" John Lennon There is truth in this poem!

Love ya!

yes, the truth is still there to be so precisely depicted in the last two lines; but this is a pure emotion. As for the logic, the truth is in math, the original language of the universe; but we're still too immature to grasp the beauty of it to communicate at the upgraded level. This piece is not about the scriptures and their heroes, always ideologized, it's about the breath of Heaven and Earth, 'the wind of the lost spirit,' which refuses to make us whole. . . And this phase is the core of the poem composed so truthfully. Bingo! Bravo, Maestro. Cheers, alex

Point by point you made your case as you searched for truth. Even though wondering if truth can even be reached you took it upon yourself to seek it. I think maybe you found what you were searching for.

You are so right John. Without the Bible, there is no real TRUTH. Amen
