Scratch the surface and what do you find,
ironic pleasantries intended to be unkind.
Scratch the surface and you find uncovered,
A world of mystery waiting to be discovered.
Scratch the surface to find a wave in a shell,
Bewitching your heart with its magic spell.
Scratch the surface to unexpectedly release,
A sobering happiness and feelings of peace.
Scratch the surface to arouse a deeper love,
From your tender heart flies a pure white dove.
Scratch the surface and resentment emerges,
Betrayal, treachery and other unwanted urges.
Scratch the surface to reveal treacherous lies,
Unexpected falsehoods that you utterly despise.
Scratch the surface smile of one of your friends,
To reveal an enemy who makes no true amends.
Scratch the surface of a lone stranger to reveal,
The true st friend who makes no wrong appeal.
Scratch surface sorrows that sadden your life,
They may make you stronger by enduring strife.
Who knows what may lie just below the surface,
If you dig deeper, you may find surprising purpose.

But I'm going to dig too deep here ;)) Enjoyed reading. Cheers, alex

Your poem reveals much about what lies under a simple scratch. Strangely, it seemed like the negatives outweigh the positives.
I must be related to the dogs. Whenever my surface is scratched, it itches more and I want to have a scratch more and more and more and more… And underneath, all I can find is raw, itchy skin. Yay!

It could be good.
It could be bad.
It's that constant itch,
that drives you mad.
