Of my father, some said he was too kind.
I thought nothing of it; it slipped my mind.
Little children never think that life is unfair.
They go about their business being unaware.
My father’s kindness made him who he was.
He always had a gentle touch for all he does.
He forgave every slight that came his way.
No insult stirred him from what people say.
He seemed to take his days one at a time.
Angry if justified, but he never did whine.
He paid little attention to the empty word.
He took note of the value of what he heard.
At work he found a wallet tied with string.
He thought about where the wallet to bring.
Downstairs an office for the lost and found.
He looked at the cash, with no one around.
‘Stuff the cash into a pocket’ crossed his mind;
But he couldn’t overcome the urge to be kind.
“You decide,” his mind said and decide he did,
As if to look in a trash can only to close the lid.
The lost property office perhaps the best space,
What was lost soon returned to its rightful place.
The voice inside never wavering, strong and firm.
If this was being “too kind”, it was not his concern.
The lady looked surprised as he opened the door.
He said to her: “It was just lying there on the floor.”
“Not many people would give back this much money.”
“Not giving it back,” he replied, “would seem funny.”
“You are a decent man,” she said, “and very kind.”
Perhaps, he thought, so long as I am not too kind.
I DON'T BELIEVE WE CAN BE 'TOO KIND' JOHN. I THINK YOUR FATHER EXEMPLIFIED THIS...WHAT DID HE LOSE BY BEING KIND, EVEN IF OVERLY SO? THE WORLD THAT HE TOUCHED WAS BLESSED BECAUSE OF IT. I CAN THINK OF ANOTHER THAT WAS OVERLY KIND AND THE WORLD THAT 'HE' TOUCHED WAS AND IS STILL BEING BLESSED. THERE IS SOMETHING TO BE SAID ABOUT GOING BEYOND WHAT IS EXPECTED. YOU SEEMED TO HAVE HAD A WONDERFUL FATHER, JOHN, THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
it is an interesting point to be noticed here. It concern an amplitude of a man's cultural well-being. A well breeding horses or a dogs are something different. . . Enjoyed so much reading this short ballad. Cheers, alex
You can be proud of your father as I was of mine. My father made those kinds of decisions after checking what was in the billfold. I, on the other hand, upon finding something lost, would not even look inside to see if there was money. Returning what was lost is all that I would think about. By doing that, no tempting moral decision is required.
When somebody in West Virginia asked me where I was from and I said, "Wisconsin." He told me that I was probably honest. When I asked him, "Why?" He related a story.
It seems that a coal miner lost his billfold one day. Six months later, while shoveling coal into his furnace, a dairy farmer from Wisconsin discovered the billfold in his coal. He picked it up, cleaned it off and checked for an address inside. Finding an address, he sent the billfold with all of its contents, including all the money, back to the coal miner.
Questions, unquestioned discoveries, and answers in parable and rhyme…. This collection records a journey starting with a 1960s retrospective and the first man on the moon, moving to a new millennium welcomed in with a terrorist spin, family crises,
If you tend to believe romantic, passionate, masculine poetry is a thing of past eras, read "She Intrigues Me," and be swept away in the beautiful craft of a contemporary poet of love.
Love ya!
