Melancholy in Farewell
By John Herlihy

“So this be the end of it,’
He said with a crease of sorrow.
“I could say it as much,”
She replied with a shadow of a frown.
“Enough then to say goodbye,”
A glance at her nails her stoic reply
Adding cryptically, “You know the reason why.”
“Indeed I do,” he grunted roughly.
Sunlight slanted down diagonally in shafts.
Summertime umbrellas shaded the customers.

They both continued to sit across from each other,
Sipping the dregs of their coffee cups in silence.
But no silence was there to surround them,
Sounds sometimes have more meaning than words.
This long silent stretch of awkwardness
And all its attendant circumstances were subdued
By the touch of spoons on china, plates laid.
Sirens could be heard in the near distance;
Sickness wails and hastens to find a lasting cure.
Pigeon wings flutter and create a stir of wind;
Life seems to go on amid this continuing whirr.
The click of heels resonates arrival and departure,
A child’s smiling face could be seen in the aperture.
A waiter whistled unconsciously as the tune carried,
A couple nearby chatted like birds, nearly married.

The hum of chatting customers blended as murmur
In chorus to the lingering melancholy of this farewell.
Silence meets the moment when nothing is left to say.
She gave her handbag a decisive click, arose and left.
He would never see her again and it felt like theft.
As she departed, he heard the rustle of her skirt.
Later, he would begin to feel something like hurt.

Life goes on as you have let us see through your use of imagery! Everybody's got to do their own thing, eh?

Love ya!

FUNNY HOW WE NOTICE THINGS WE NEVER WOULD...IN THE AWKWARD SILENCE AND YET SO PAINFULLY LOUD MOMENTS...OF A SAD FAREWELL. YOU'VE CAPTURED IT PERFECTLY HERE, JOHN...KUDOS! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

And after the hurt, might there be the rush, the overwhelming reward of a lesson. Your prosetry is so to the point of paradox: the white of black, the light of dark, et al. Oh the hurt... so profound when one realizes to know hurt is to know its unity of opposites: pleasure. This kind of writing is so needed today. Kudos.

I like the picture that goes with this, and nearly married was an excellent descriptive.

Another pleasant change of pace. A powerful story poem. From the detail I would think that you had experienced something like this. Made me wonder, the way that I drink my coffee so quickly, that I would probably drink three or four cups during encounter like this. But it would not ease the pain or the sleepless nights that would follow.

An extraordinary write about a very painful moment. Sometimes we don't know the reason why because we are in denial, but the reason may have been there for some time - when love is gone.

So much in the air surrounded this couple. “You know the reason why.” was a complete, his grunt of an answer sealed the atmosphere with a divisiveness farewell. This was very well prepared.

This was a little different than what you usually post, but it was quite good. Enjoyed the story.

Farewell's can be rife with all sorts of emotion. A nice vignette. r
