The Breath of Happiness
By John Herlihy

Today I take pen in hand,
To write about happiness.
I look to the heavens grand,
And shudder at its fickleness.

Happiness begins on the fly,
On the breath of gentle wind.
But ends with the note of a sigh,
And tastes of bitter lemon rind.

It lies quietly in the bed of others,
Amid soft blankets and puff pillows.
It grows in the garden of my brothers,
In the shade of the weeping willows.

For me, it does not give nary a care,
Its wind blows onward forever more.
I have only to look around and stare,
My happiness lost on a distant shore.

If not happiness, then we have sorrow,
Stolen moments of today and tomorrow.
Sorrow that flutters like feathers on wings,
Buried deep in a heart that no longer sings.

Simple joy to arrive as a guest unbidden,
As I roam idly through the city crowds.
My only happiness lies quietly hidden,
In the dark shadows of passing clouds.

Do not ask for a thing not rightly ours,
Happiness lies not in wind but breath.
To be found amid the passing hours,
Moment by moment until our death.

THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HAPPINESS AND JOY THEY ARE NOT THE SAME AT ALL. HAPPINESS IS AS YOU SAY, FLEETING AND DEPENDS ON WHAT'S HAPPENING IN OUR LIVES THAT'S WHY I CHOOSE JOY, ALWAYS. I'M A LIVING WITNESS; ALTHOUGH HAPPINESS BIDS ADIEU, JOY MIRACULOUSLY REMAINS TO BRING A SMILE, DESPITE A TEAR. HIS JOY...IS OUR STRENGTH(NEH 8:10). THANKS FOR SHARING, ENJOYED MUCH. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I could say that when we find happiness, we can let loose of the thoughts of holding our breath for it to happen. Your poem shows us that, when we are happy, it makes no difference whether we are here or there

I believe happiness is just a state of mind. It's a great world if we don't let it get us down. Or as Jim Ignatowski would say. There's something to make you happy, but unfortunately it wears off.
Enjoyed your write, it was great the whole way through.

Another goody from you, you have given us many good ones, this one ranks up near the top. These two lines are exceptional . . .

"Do not ask for a thing not rightly ours,
Happiness lies not in wind but breath."

Lovely thought provoking poetry! It made me think of how I loved being in Hawaii. However, when I was there without my family, I was not truly happy. Happiness is enjoying and sharing something beautiful WITH loved ones who will cherish those special moments with you forever. Amen
