Where have they gone?
I have no idea where or when.
The question lingers only a moment,
Not wishing to stir what might have been.
I still see them in my dreams,
As I, the grandfather, breathe on.
Comfortable in a porch armchair,
I look back into the past and stare.
The grandkids run over to me every time,
Show me their treasures like poetic rhyme.
As I look to the future, they are not there,
Things change, kids grow up, life goes on.
I no longer have the heart to pretend.
They have run out of the past I remember,
Into their own future, theirs to contend.
When I dream, I dream of them as they were,
Lock in my arms, their words they slur.
They pinch my cheeks and stroke my beard,
Their little voices the sweetest ever heard.
A sense of loss sometimes invades my ground.
I do not allow it to approach or stick around.
With sweet memories, there is no sense of loss,
A deep chasm that I will never need to cross.
TO KNOW THAT THE TRUE FULFILLMENT OF LIFE IS IN THOSE THINGS THAT CANNOT BE PURCHASED; THE BIRTH AND GROWTH OF GENERATIONS WHICH ONE CAN LEAVE BEHIND IN THE CAPABLE HANDS OF GOD...PRODUCES NO SENSE OF LOSS WHEN WE VIEW...OUR PROMISED ETERNAL HOME AHEAD. WONDERFUL! LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS
Such wonderful memories linger in my mind of my grandchildren when they were small and my own children as well. Time certainly flies! You touched upon every emotion and so many of the cute things those little ones would do that keep their memories so strong!
My mother told me last Monday that she delighted so much when her three great-grandchildren came to see her with their parents, my grand niece and nephew.
When the grandchildren are gone and grown up with their own lives, their children can come back around to substitute for those lost grandchildren.
The little ones will always have fond memories of their grandparents no matter how far apart they have drifted.
My childhood memories were of my grandparents from both my mother's side and my father's side of the family. I was raised by my mom's parents from birth to almost 7 years old, and I will never forget how good it was to be loved by my grandfather who had named me his "Lucky Star". I would always kiss his half-shaven face after he comes back from work. The roughness always got to my lips, and he would always say, "Gotcha!" in Chinese. LOL!!!!
My oldest g-daughter just turned 18, and moving into adulthood. When she was little, we were joined at the hip. We pretty much raised for the 1st two years, and our bond was tight. Were still quite close, but I miss the innocence of her youth. Two other g-daughters, are just entering the teen years. Although we were just as close, they have become quite surly, filled with teenage angst. I can't wait until they outgrow that. And then I have 2 more g-daughters that are 2 and 3 years old, so I keep busy with them, and watch them quite often. I'm not sure if they make me feel old, or keep me young. Probably a little of both.
