Lost in Outer Space

By John Herlihy

Our earth travels in orbit as a perfect sphere,

In the darkness of outer space, no need for fear.

An imperceptible turning in universal rhythms,

Equal to the glowing light of celestial prisms.

Since time immemorial, the journey is made,

Carved on eternal tablets by the Divine Blade.

Into the Supreme Void, our humanity was born,

From the light of inspiration, from eternity torn.

Caught in the infinite embrace of a vast wilderness,

Without the grace of stars, it would be emptiness.

Wrapped in the spacious drapery of innocence,

Encased in a beauty that knows no malevolence.

Still, the vast silence, limitlessness of this alien place,

Only highlights the rare intimacy of the human race.

The beauty of this planet as witnessed in pictures from outer space and the wonder of space itself is limitless. You made this all come to life with your "brush".

Love ya!

I find your poem deep, thought-provoking but also soothing somehow, John. Thank you for sharing. Love and peace to you.

We are so very unique that there may not be anyone like us in the whole universe. To me that means we should not waste our talents on trivial pursuits. As I read I was reminded of that wonderful monotone that Carl Sagan had when he described the view of Earth and all of us from the viewpoint of Explorer at the point of leaving the solar system behind, "that small blue dot." The glory of our insignificance.

One of my favorite scenes is the earth rise taken from the moon. Majestic hardly describes the beauty of our world in the vastness of space. Just viewing the earth from space, one has to realize how small and insignificant we are.

A grand view of earth as seen from your eyes as we hurtle through space immortal. Each line is beauty untold.
