Where Majesty is Found

By John Herlihy

Majesty is not only found in monuments and potentates;

What appears majestic may innerly be mere reprobates.

The pillars of Corinth and Arc du Triumph may stand tall;

But they are constructed of stone and weathered after all.

Atilla the Hun built a kingdom from jaded visions of power;

Genghis Khan ruled his world until death cried his final hour.

Whether it be flesh and blood that flows in a person’s veins;

Or mortar and ancient stone that end as ruins and remains.

While the sense of majesty may fill the edifice of the mind;

The origins of its wonder may be drawn from another kind.

Great empires darkened by history as shadows from clouds;

Great men forgotten by history wrapped in ancient shrouds.

In the cavern of the heart lies an emotion never forgotten;

Sorrow contains a majesty from great suffering begotten.

The last line is the poet's revenge or having to endure the magisty of the magistrate. Most monuments from the past were raised by brutal potentates, two of which you named in your poem. But memory fades and stories passed down become legend, casting a kinder nature to the brutality of the raising. Lost in time, the tales become romance even though there was no romance at the time for the poor people of that slave state.

The rise to power, political or otherwise, can, for the most part be attributed to savage hierarchy. Violence begets more violence, and many times violence is all the new country knows.
