I Only Remember Remembering

By John Herlihy

I only remember remembering,

Not the details of June or September.

Brief flashes of insight come with no pretending,

The sharp edges, the harshness hard to remember.

Home was a place way back when,

Gone much of the memory that happened then.

Now I take home with me deep inside,

All the happy memories come along for the ride.

Who remembers the reason that caused me to cry,

The wings that lifted me at times into the sky,

The heavy burden that dragged me down into despair,

All the entreaties I made to God in desperate prayer?

An old lover now faded into the past,

Intense emotions never destined to last.

Those pure moments of love seemed forever,

Until love’s passion passes, remembered never.

Early childhood sadness now totally forgotten,

Sitting nestled amid colored autumn leaves remembered.

The treasured moments I had with my best friend,

Now I can’t remember what brought us together in the end.

I now monitor my life by the places I have lived,

All the details of what happened in those places short-lived.

I remember remembering how I was once betrayed,

The details have now slipped my mind, but the memory stayed.

Forgetting needs no remembering and so needs no regret,

Perhaps we should live our moments to the fullest, then forget.

Even now, in my old age, I sometimes forget to remember,

Until the floodgates open again to the days of June and September.

My memories are disjointed. In troubled times, I've erased blocks of time from my mind. I remember happier times with a bit more clarity. My memories are like a movie reel with pieces destroyed or faded away. I've stopped trying to look back and instead look forward.

IF I CAN REMEMBER ENOUGH TO GET ME THROUGH FROM DAY TO DAY, MY FRIEND, THAT IS QUITE ENOUGH FOR ME. ANYTHING ELSE THAT I BRING TO MIND, TO REMEMBER REMEMBERING, IS PURE, SWEET ICING ON THE CAKE. THANK YOU, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

I remember most everything, John. Those "bad" memories I like to keep behind closed doors, under lock and key. But they find a way out and into many of my poems. Enjoyed this excellent write, my friend.

Yes, memory is a fickle friend. I find that I remember most the good times and the times that hurt. But I need to write them down before the memory fades. It is interesting that you think June and September as the time when memories seem to flow more freely. I believe that may be because that is when you return/leave home from your annual teaching in the Middle East.

Isn't it amazing how a song, scent, taste, ect. can trigger memories we thought were long forgotten, only to have those memories come flooding back to us. And then there's selective memory, and the well that's the way I remember it. Two people can have completely different memories of the same thing. Enjoyed your poem.

A great title. And the subject matter feels deeply personal. I can't help but think that you are far more inclined to reveal the depths of who you are with your poetry rather than face-to-face with another. Enjoyed this insight, John. Peace... r

I love the sweet innocent look of the child in the photo, the words you express evoke the same imagined look I hold, "you must have looked very much like this " I believe that when your mind doesn't remember, your heart never forgets. Otherwise, you wouldn't write like this. Loved it John, hope your having a wonderful day , Hugs
