The Promise of Rain

By John Herlihy

The promise of rain lies expectant in the heart;

In the clouds of the mind a wave to break apart.

A life parched, dry, expectations there on borrow;

In the cracks and crevices lies a lingering sorrow.

The road rough and crooked, seeking a straight line,

Winding through hills and valleys impervious to time.

The cloud shadows of summer seem heavy and dark;

The day awaits the coming of rain as does the lark.

The air itself seems filled with hope and plenitude.

When the rains come, they bring an air of certitude.

For now, the promise lingers in the sightless wind,

That blows thru the graceful trees its limbs to bend.

In its own good time, the wind will bring abundant rain;

The blessing will wash over my soul and relieve its pain.

OH, ISN'T IT JUST MARVELOUS?! TO RECEIVE STRENGTH TO GO ON! THERE'S NOTHING LIKE THE WASHING OF 'HIS' RAIN...THAT BEAUTIFUL SPIRITUAL FULFILLED PROMISE, WHICH REMINDS US, JUST IN TIME...WE ARE NOT ALONE. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND...SO ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Rain is refreshing to a human's soul. I like it when it pours down like Niagara Falls. We had that kind of rain back in Hong Kong when I was a small girl. I would wear my ponchos raincoat and my rubber boots, go out to the street to have fun. That was then, but now I'm in Canada we hardly get rains like that anymore. When I get older now I realize rain can cause a lot of damages to many who are experiencing floodings in their countries. Houses got swept away. What people have worked for all their lives are gone in a matter of minutes. I don't like it when the rain brings floods.

However, you have penned here a very inspiring metaphoric poem about the expectancy of rain that would lubricate the dried, cracked road that you have traveled to ease the pain in your heart. This poem is uniquely yours and your feelings are well-expressed.

I love the way tree leaves turn up when a rain is coming, and then the freshness of the air after a good rain. All in all, I'd say your poem was right as rain.

As is so true with much of your poetry, the focus of your subject, the promise of rain, is so precisely rendered with beautiful rhyming to make it classic in terms of poetic style.

The image and your sonnet compliment each other delightfully. Fine imagery you've painted with your word-brush. Enjoyed this insight, John. Peace... r

You are metaphysical within your thoughts and poetry lines, John, so much so in my opinion the rhyming pattern caused your poetry to "take it to the limit." Well done.
