- The Faces We Wear -

By John Herlihy

We have got many faces to wear in our lives,

And we wear them one by one.

Some of them are true and some of them lies,

From bliss, weakness, sadness spun.

We wear all our moods like a thread-bare cloak,

Sensitive lessons we never learn.

Happiness and love, sadness and grief each a heavy yoke,

Not a single human emotion do we spurn.

An infant’s face a map of innocence, the child pure bliss,

The young adult eager with hope.

More mature people with shadows of all they may miss,

Old people still clinging to life’s rope.

We have got many faces to wear in our lives,

And we wear them one by one.

The face shows the world the inner workings of soul,

All the experience that we ever stole.

THIS IS TRUE...WE DO ALL WEAR MASKS...SOME TRANSPARENT, SOME NOT. I GUESS IT DEPENDS ON WHO IS LOOKING. WELL DONE, MY FRIEND...INDEED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Unless we're adept a masking our feelings, our faces do show the world the inner workings of the soul, especially through the eyes.

Yes, indeed! We can only wear one face at a time to each and every situation we must face. I especially enjoy the last line, John!!

Love ya!

The faces concept you present is a reality many people run from. Yet, we wear mulitiple faces each day, from a morning glance in the grooming mirror, the breakfast greeting to family members, the subway, bus, car face we wear traveling to the next masquerade, work. And so on. Try as some might, the study of facial expressions as they evolve during the day is indeed a worthwhile venture. Know it well.

We wear many hats, not many faces. Each hat gives us the ability to tackle life's problems.

You can say that some people wear masks, but not faces. Some masks may smile at you while whispering negativity about you behind your back after all you have done is to help them. Yes, I have seen such mask lately, and it has been a great disappointment, but like everything else bad, I have to let it go and forget.

Nice poem, but I didn't understand how happiness and love could be a heavy yoke. If anything, they should lighten our burdens. And what a picture. it looks like Two Face In Mirror Master's world.

It has also been said that we wear many hats. And, that we play many roles on the stage of life. But in your poem I sense some negativity that doesn't necessarily have to be there. I guess for those who hide behind smiling faces while doing dastardly things, this would apply. But I think more often the innocence of childhood can stay with adults all the way to old age when they become wise and helpful to younger generations with their wisdom.
