In the Midnight Hour

By John Herlihy

Is it really so strange that we have to give account?

Life gives and life takes, what’s left is the amount.

We live as paupers and kings in this place of exile,

We nurse our sorrow and seek happiness for a while.

Whatever our ambition, it’s all fool’s gold in the end,

Whether wealth or power, all from heaven descend.

It is not the having that matters, but the having done,

All of the rest slips thru our fingers as sand on the run.

Very little is important in the world, though it seems so,

After years pass by, we forget much of what we know.

They say that before death life passes before our eyes,

A long lifetime in fleeting seconds before our demise.

As the clock strikes 12 we step beyond the threshold,

In the midnight hour we give account, when all is told.

INDEED, THERE IS NO GETTING AROUND IT! THERE IS NOT ONE HUMAN BEING UPON THE FACE OF THIS EARTH WHO WILL ESCAPE...THE MIDNIGHT HOUR. THANKS FOR SHARING, MY FRIEND. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

The midnight hour strikes terror in many hearts. I hope yours will be --in the far future-- pleasant and fulfilling.

"It is not the having that matters, but the having done,"

What a fasnating thought, arranging old thoughts to give us new life within this fabulous, sincere poem, John. Thank you for it.

Someone once said, the best we can hope for is to die with the right regrets. Enjoyed your thoughts.

Very nice poem of the purpose and foibles of life. I believe this existence is a boot camp where we learn wisdom, make mistakes and learn how to fix them. Why else a silly cycle that seems to accomplish nothing? Evolving the self toward perfection is a noble goal. I look forward to your poem every day.

True: what matters is what we have done, and not what we have.

Yes we need to give account at the end of our lives, but in our hearts live the memories nestled deep. Merry Christmas dear friend, xo

Not yet, not yet hahaha! I like the thoughts in this poem, melancholic with a serious undertone.

In the Whirlwind by Tichaona Chinyelu

In the Whirlwind is a poetic storm that frees history from the cages of corruption and puts it in the hands of everyday people. Words are weaved into a new fashion statement that has nothing to do with runways but everything to do with projects!
