- The Silence of Dreams -
By John Herlihy
We go about our business in a cacophony of sound,
Shrill cries, whistles, and police sirens all around.
Our ears bombarded with the thrilling invasion of noise,
We resort to the sound of laughter to express our joys.
Even our eyes partake like ears with the miracle of hearing,
Lightning speaks of thunder, storm clouds on the horizon leering.
Our tears sparkle in the light; but to cry evokes dark shade,
All of creation makes itself known thru sounds God made.
The braying of a donkey, cry of a peacock, song of a loon,
All draw their essence from the notes of an ancient rune.
In our dreams, we visit places not unlike the world we knew,
Places that in the dream are wrapped in morning dew.
The silence of the mind invites rumors, whispers, and cries,
But listen, the mind plays no music our dreams to disguise.
The eerie silence in this other world makes things seem untrue ,
The simplest of pleasures, the laughter and cries, gone from view.
In escaping the world, silence gives us a sense of immunity;
The silence of the mind seems breathless, touched by eternity.
Desperately, we reach out with our senses to see, touch, hear;
As in dreams of falling we awaken, as all the silences disappear.
