- Silence in the Age of Noise -

By John Herlihy

A white snow of silence heard on mountain peaks

Recalls the breathless awakening the dawn seeks.

The ghostly movement seen in the budding flower

Multiplied a thousand times in the garden’s bower.

Who hears the million steps of the caterpillar’s legs

To whisper sweet nothings with the delicacy of eggs.

Have you listened to the music of sunrise and sunset,

Melodies of days passing of our happiness and regret.

Silence in our cumbersome age of noise a fragile thing,

Shattered into pieces the cacophony of sound will bring.

Quietly, silence makes itself known in ways that glisten;

Wisely, silence teaches people the fine art how to listen.

You may seek an entire lifetime for an absence of sound;

In today’s caustic world, true silence may never be found.

THIS IS TRUE, INDEED. THERE IS ALWAYS SOMETHING...SOME OBVIOUS OR UNSEEN MOVEMENT ...GOING ON. THUS, OUR WORLD IS NEVER, WAS NEVER AND NEVER WILL BE...SILENT. THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...JOYCE * HIS INSPIRATIONS

Deep thoughts. Makes me yearn for "diving into the ocean of God's wisdom, exploring", as they say we will do in the afterlife. Well, there's a time for everything.

I am a refugee from noise and have been all of my life, for I believe in the healing spiritual power of nature's untainted presence. Nature, by its very nature, favors quietude. In the absence of jarring, disconsolate frenzies of artificially created noise that humanity infuriatingly superimposes upon all things, we regain that tenuously delicate and ineluctable deliciousness that is our connectivity with our essential cosmic origins.

When I was in my 20s, now many years in my past, I regularly left the supremely disharmonic enclave that was Berkeley to spend my weekends high among the fastness and solitude of the Sierra Nevada summits. Up there, no man-made noises dared assault my senses. The great silence that prevailed was not unlike the quiet, contemplative atmosphere one finds in the naive of a great cathedral, broken only by the whispered songs of the wind as it played upon the snowfields and down the couloirs. It was very cathartic. After several days in such perfectly natural peacefulness, I was able to return again to cope with the human cacophony you so aptly cite in this piece, for another week.

There is certainly something about the lack of silence in our world that begs the soul to pause and allow the every so quiet of breath from all that is to be solemnly appreciated. Thank you for this reminder of how powerful the silence of just being.

At one point during a tour of Carlsbad Caverns, the guide gathered us all together, and then turned off the lighting.. Along with experiencing total darkness, everyone stayed quiet, and we experienced total silence. It was so quiet, I could hear the blood rushing through my ears. I have been in many caves where this was done, but this was the first time that everyone stayed quiet, and it was quite an experience. Silence is golden.

I love your ideas put into poetry and prose, John, this one really chills me to the bone. It is dark and heavy with trusim which you cultivated within yourself . . . ONE of your absolute best. As we used to say back in the sixtied . . . Heavy, man, heavy.

This is just lovely and serene. Not a fan of noise one bit this really appeals. I calmed down a bit just reading and looking at that beautiful picture. Your poetry always pleases!
