- New Paths -

By John Herlihy

Even here at the end of the road,

I am still seeking many new paths.

Look at me and see but an old toad,

Ready to croak. still he who laughs.

The body is old, the mind yet young,

The future rushing at me, still there.

Still feeling fresh, from dreams spun,

Still reluctant to stop going anywhere.

Things no longer stir me to madden,

Enough did happen my life to sadden.

Past life simply tucked into the past,

Sadness may linger, but will never last.

I at times do remember things I missed,

But they eventually drift into life’s mist.

There, in the distance, I see one last path,

A new one indeed, offering one last laugh.

Love the wonderfully written poetry. It touched my heart, because I am where the words take me. I turn eighty in April.

Your poem gives us hope that regardless of how far we have come, there always new paths ahead to follow until we can no longer tread forward.

I've always been one who gets off the beaten path to chart my own path, just to see where I end up. I'm sure there are many paths left for you to chart as well.

Your words rev me up! I think it is going to be something so explosive when we "Break on through to the other side." The Doors. The Universe is alive! Infinity! There you go, John! You have me on my soap box! 'Enjoyed!

You are not an old toad but a vibrant poet who never ceases to un-shelf the heart of the reader. Beautiful vibrations John. xo

This is sad. I hope and pray one will find the right way. Amen
