-- The Child Never to Grow Old -–
John Herlihy
In the child who would never grow old,
I see the old man who is forever young.
His new life spread out ready to be told,
An old soul’s life from gold threads spun.
Who said the child the father to the man,
This seems a reversal of the Divine Plan.
Some people never grow up as they age,
And keep childlike qualities at each stage.
Think of the person who stays forever fresh,
The seed in the grain that will never thresh.
Have you met an adult lately innocent, pure,
Not to drag life behind as a thing to endure.
They hold no grudge, but forgive and forget,
Every day is a new one that holds no regret.
Their little sorrows have a moment in time,
Never worn on a sleeve, saying this is mine.
An innocent mind has no room for treachery,
The sweet soul never plants seeds of revenge.
Give me an old man who stays forever young,
And I will see a young child never to grow old.
