-- Dear Butterfly --

By John Herlihy

Dear butterfly,

I once found a friend in thee.

Often when about to cry,

Your wonder filled my infancy.

In a wild gale, you always dance,

The sight of you inspires romance.

Linger a while, please do not depart,

Your sacred image fills my heart.

Now in the grip of old age,

Your beautiful wings I still adore.

Now as I turn the final page,

I still admire your desire to explore.

Your fluttering wings, there in blue sky,

With beauty solemn, my noble butterfly.

THOUGH I DO ADMIRE HOW GORGEOUS SOME OF THEM ARE, I AM NOT PARTICULARLY DRAWN TO BUTTERFLIES. HOWEVER, I DON'T KNOW WHY, I GUESS IT'S THE BEAUTY OF THIS PIECE, I AM REMINDED OF THE FACT; MY GRANDMOTHER, WHOSE NAME WAS LOUISE, WAS NICKNAMED BUTTERFLY. SHE DIED WHEN I WAS STILL A CHILD BUT, DEAR BUTTERFLY, INDEED, I LOVED HER MUCH. ISN'T IT ODD HOW ONE THING...A NAME, A MELODY, AN AROMA OR SUCH...CAN SEND ONE TRAVELING BACK YEARS? THIS IS A WONDERFUL WORK, JOHN, FOR MORE REASONS THAN ONE, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

As majestic as the eagle comes this delicate, yet heroic dedication to a part of nature so often ignored. Beautifully rendered. Thank you, John for take the time to arrange these poetic appreciations.

So beautiful, and yet so fragile. They need our protection. Here, the Monarch is threatened with extinction, and it seems like I see fewer and fewer butterflies of any kind period.
