-- FIRST SONGBIRDS OF SPRING --
By John Herlihy
Dawn’s awning began to open wide,
Revealing all the light hidden inside.
A restless energy suddenly released,
The firm grip of winter now deceased.
The ice melts as frozen waves drifted,
Snow rose up into the wind as if sifted.
A chill in winter wind has lost its edge,
The day sets forth a promise as pledge.
Dawn light gives way to fulness of day,
The breath of spirit awakening in play.
The first songbirds of spring are heard,
To sing as luxuriously as the first bird.
Hark, in flutter of wings, the first note,
Drawn from an ancient cavern remote.
