-- THE MUSIC WITHIN --

By John Herlihy

Music all lies there quietly within,

As sequestered and quiet as a pin.

Just waiting there silent to emerge,

All the wildness within him to purge.

The silence within has very little heft,

A long weary life allows very little left.

Not the mind but body that feels ache,

Talking to him, his feelings to recreate.

Worries and fears as door hinge whine,

His secret sorrows a whisper thru pine.

What little to say comes out a mumble,

Discontent to emerge as faint grumble.

Often days when the body would shriek,

Other days soft whisper, the body meek.

The heart, not the eyes, would simply cry,

The sound later to emerge a soulful sigh.

The dog in him would sometimes growl,

The wolf in him would sometimes howl.

A sense of surprise did strike as a gong,

Rarely, almost never, a drumbeat of song.

In fact, the body never much goes silent,

Seems to prefer sounds sober or violent.

A music lies within as ripples of a piano

Sounding as allegro molto or pianissimo

Reading your words and imagining through your imagery tells a story of how music is the best medicine! I can feel the 88's beneath my fingers
as time passes by. Your words are astounding, John!!

Love ya!

Our thoughts continue to drum their song even after we fall asleep at night. The mind never quiets, never brings complete silence. For if it did, we wouldn't feel as alive as we do.

So true. If only more would leave themselves open to that inner music that, as you say, The heart, not the eyes, would simply cry,

The sound later to emerge a soulful sigh. Beautiful rendering of words making harmony and dissonance so prescient.

Struck a minor 6/9 chord in me. Brings to mind Henry David Thoreau: "If a man does not keep pace with his companions, perhaps it's because he hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music he hears, however measured or far away." Enjoyed your thoughts John. r
