-- THE LAST STRAW --

By John Herlihy

We all end up somehow the worse for wear;

Frayed edges of my life show wear and tear.

Then the proverbial straw to break the camel’s back,

Making me feel as though tied up in a sack.

Why do I often feel caught in the lion’s paw,

Or worse gripped by the teeth in the wolf’s jaw.

A dire event happens that becomes the last straw,

Or retribution comes my way thru Jude’s law.

Do I really have to pass through the eye of the needle,

And not flatter my way to heaven thru my ability to wheedle.

At first slow then fast do I move thru the sands of time,

We each have our own hourglass, you yours, me mine.

Don’t they say every cloud has a silver lining

Why then do I cry into my cups, always pining?

Life has always offered me plenty of cheap thrills,

Making me feel packed to the rafters, full to the gills.

Forget not the bold images of the hammer and sickle;

The phases of the moon suggest our moods most fickle.

Finally, who so bold to actually knock on death’s door?

The person with nothing to lose, always ready to explore.

IN A MOMENT ALL THE RESILIENCE TO THE PRESSURE ONE HAS BEEN BEARING UP UNDER CAN SUDDENLY COME TUMBLING DOWN AND ONE CAN COMPLETELY...'LOSE IT!INDEED, THROUGH GOD'S WISDOM AND STRENGTH ONE SHOULD DISCONNECT FROM ANY SITUATION WHERE THEY ARE BEING STEADILY DRAWN TOWARDS THE 'WEIGHT' OF...THE LAST STRAW. A POEM SO WELL DONE, JOHN, AND ENJOYED. THIS HIT CLOSER TO HOME THAN YOU COULD EVER IMAGINE. THANKS FOR THE SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

"always ready to explore." Absolutely! Should be a writers credo. I've experienced quite a few pseudo "last straws" in my life. I figured out early that when you hit the bottom of the well, there's only two places to go; burrow further down in the muck, or head back up towards the light. I've always chosen the Light. Enjoyed this. Thanks for sharing. r

Amen! To arrive at the level of self-discovery is to arrive at that point when one realizes he or she is but an iteration of molecules joined with all other molecules, and thus... nothing to lose, for you are part of forever. Insightful exploration a lot of readers should read.

This was a truly melancholy write, at least it was to me. I've often felt this way and have just as often felt the last straw settle like a feather across my shoulders. Yet, though I may fall to my knees beneath its weight I always find the strength to rise and fight again.

The last line is a fantastic ending to this poem which was already FANtastic! Gotta love it, and I do.
