-- MY FATE AWAITIN’ --
By John Herlihy
Here I am just a-rumblin’ along, my fate awaitin’,
Lonesome dove aflutter and my heart a-breakin’.
Always pointed there in the direction of my desires,
Head spinning in a fog, my mind full of crossed wires.
There before me not some pearly but broken-down gate,
Another toll road to travel while heaven beyond can wait.
Doesn’t much matter now to end up one place or another,
Always a stranger around to become a new-found brother.
Remembering the sad merry-go-round music of my youth,
Me with a head chuck full of cobwebs, still feelin’ uncouth.
Here I am, sleepin in some country wagon on a bed of burlap,
Good old fate humming in my heart where it contentedly sat.
The wagon rigger turned and asked: “You going somewhere?”
My voice of fate replied, “just going, will eventually get there.”

But you certainly don't have any cobwebs when it comes to writing poetry. Another brilliant construction, not only physically but metaphorically. As I read, that haunting tune from the Sons of the Pioneers, Cool Water, kept popping into my head.
