-- CHILDHOOD DREAMS --

John Herlihy

Hung bare-legged from apple trees,

We crawled into holes on our knees.

On the front porch, we counted stars,

We ran and collected fireflies in jars.

In terror, we swatted the dragonflies,

The poor grasshoppers none too wise.

Easy to catch, pull off their little legs,

Stuff the baby turtles in square pegs.

I played Red Indian to Roger’s cowboy,

Those lined-up soldiers my favorite toy.

We insulted a gang on another street,

Grandma we always did politely greet.

Into my mouth, I stuffed cotton candy,

In suspenders and bow tie I felt dandy.

After dinner, I wolfed down brown betty

At night, I slept with my toy bear Teddy

In fear, I sang solo in the church choir,

In autumn, I set colored leaves on fire.

My mud-smeared face held no dreams,

Free in the dream of childhood it seems.

As is usually the case, poetisize a childhood memory and all will identify. In you case, your identity moments are unique in most instances, and because of that, avoid the cliche.
Well done.

I remember those days. I was such a tomboy. My parents tried to feminize me with Barbie dolls but I would just allow my brother to make them a star in his sandbox disaster scenarios. I much preferred hanging out with my friends, Jimmy and Johnny, who were happy to let me be a boy, too.

this poem immediately transported me back into my own child-hood days, and made me feel good.
Very evocative poem, the imagery is very effective...just loved this poem, so much!

Some interesting, well rhymed memories of childhood activity, especially with a friend or relative, Roger. You didn't state what happened after you insulted that gang, that's probably why you expressed fear and got your relief in the choir. I would only join a church choir to get close to a girl there. ;-) Although there were gangs in my neighborhood, I never got in any tangles with them, knowing that it would be hard for me and my brother.

Ahhh . . . I could've, would've written this poem because it is my story also.

"In fear, I sang solo in the church choir,"

Actually I was the Junior Choir director . . . Yup, ya brought back memories, my friend, and I gratefully thank you for that.

I may not have done the same things that herein you've spoken of but I can most assuredly identify with it and transfer it to the crackpot things we did! Like, egg and water balloon the NJ Transit bus so badly that the cops came and made us all, whether we were involved or not, clean the bus from top to bottom, only to have the same thing done to it in the next town down...LOL -e-
