-- Alone Never Again --
By John Herlihy
Who fetched me down so low
With me afloatin’ there so high
Who thought to be in the know
As I made my way on the sly
Who pushed forward for more
When I had more than enough
Who done cried out to implore
With my life tangled in the rough
Who kept me lingerin’ behind
When I should be movin’ on quick
Who whispered things to me unkind
Things enough to make me feel sick
Who gave me a heap of trouble
As I just went about my way
Who left me sunk in the rubble
With nothing left for me to say
Why am I sometimes ornery
About the things that I do
Why do I oftentimes sound corny
When I should recite all I knew
Who told me to do that wrong
When I knew all along what was right
Who had me sing that desperate song
All through the weary hours of the night
One said: I done some doctorin’ in my time
Lay on of hands and hopin’ a cure to be all mine
You:: finger-puppets, actor, tragedy, you know
Singing the alphabet to kids, to help them grow
That’s about my whole yarn, I heard yourn
The other looked around the barn, feeling torn
Let’s team up together, we’d make a good duo
Alone on our own, we’d just flounder around solo
And so the two hobos went on their merry way
Wondering all about who done did what and when
Still wondering, still questioning, having a lot to say
But now having a friend to answer, alone never again
