 -- Solitary Flame --

By John Herlihy

I serve as solitary flame

Mr. Candle is my name

I burn all day and night

Casting my glowing light

So much emotion be felt

My body doth slowly melt

My light cast shadows far

Quietude of night to mar

My light cast shadows wide

In my heart nothing to hide

The darkness will then flare

This meager light to bear

When my wick runs down

Little light and less sound

That little light will soon go

To a place only angels know

To become an eternal flame

A human soul with a name

There above as stars in flight

To brighten the cosmic night

This is a wonderful metaphor for the soul's journey and the imagery is superb! I enjoyed it very much.
