-- True Hope -- John Herlihy Don’t give me a hope That will swindle and chide me. Don’t give me a hope That will betray or bribe me. Don’t give me a hope That will divert and defy me. Don’t give me a hope That will tempt and torture me. Give me a hope That will thrive and thrill me. Give me a hope That will embolden and ennoble me. Give me a hope That will succeed and survive me. Give me a hope That will outlive and outlast me. In false hope lies things selfish, In true hope lies no silly wish. False hope lies in the wishing well, True hope lies in promises that tell. False hope sends forth wolf cries, True hope will never tell any lies. In false hope lies abandonment, In true hope lies contentment. Give me no false hope That will always empty me. Your words remind me to keep the faith and not to let hope die. I guess we all need this message at times. When I pray I put my hope into my prayer. Beautiful poem, John!!

Hope is like dreams. Sometimes it comes true, and sometimes it doesn't. Or as we old hippies like to say, there's no hope without dope.

Unfortunately, John, 'hope' is one of, if not the greatest bugaboo of mankind's making. It is that annoying quirk of human thought thing that keeps so many of the lesser thinkers amongst us constantly believing in better things for the insufferably pesky bio lifeform called 'Homo sapiens' that we (regrettably) belong to. As a philosopher of the Schopenhauer tradition, I cannot join you in hoping for anything better than the tawdry, insufferable and often unspeakable travesties of life we observe around us and suffer daily, but I can respect your desire to believe in (and celebrate) better possibilities! Were it possible, it would indeed be a 'Christmas miracle'. That said and all such philosophical grumblings aside, best wishes for a pleasant and personally meaningful holiday season, be it Christmas, Kwanza, Channukah, Zoroaster's birthday, Equinox, or whatever.
