-- Miracle of the Senses --

John Herlihy

The sense of smell elevates and intoxicates,

The wind often roars or speaks in whispers.

The sense of touch a feather approximates,

Hearing collects laughter like court jesters.

Let us not forget the sublime sense of taste,

A subtle revelation that will inspire no waste.

Leave not behind the glorious sense of sight,

Whose wonder will fill us with joyous delight.

Simply gaze with attention on a dawn thrush,

To experience in every fiber that sense of rush.

Dawn sunlight reflects within us as inner glow,

Enlightening our perceptions with all we know.

The miracles of the senses leave nothing askew,

Bestowing insights on the soul we never knew.

CAN WE EVER THANK OUR CREATOR ENOUGH FOR THIS WONDROUS MIRACLE WHICH HE HAS PLACED IN OUR PHYSIOLOGICAL SYSTEM?!? I THINK NOT. BEAUTIFULLY DONE, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Our senses are unique to the human among all the other mammals. Each with their own unique survival sensors that have brought them to this day. We can compensate for missing some of these, but they all degrade somewhat as we age. As for me, I would love to be a teenager again and experience the dawn thrush in a opening in the forest. I would delight that what I would feel, hear, and see.

Delightfully written with a keen sense of what touches us from mere words.

Your words remind me of how grateful we must be for these "senses"! As I walk in the woods, inhale the fresh air, look up into the sky, feel the moss beneath my bare feet, and hear the little animals scurrying about, I will think of your poem and smile.

Love ya!

And then there is the newly discovered sense, proprioception, the sense of where we are in space, i.e., e.g., pulled over for a traffic violation and given the drunk test where when police ask a drunken person to touch their finger to the tip of their nose, they miss often.

If only we could remain aware of where we are in space for cogently, and combine that with the other senses, as you've so deftly poeticized here, wouldn't we be that much better off? But alas, most accept just drifting... not knowing or caring where they really are in big picture of things. Okay, a bit metaphorical, but still...

Unfortunately in today's world people are too involved with their busy lives to fully appreciate their innate senses. How many actually stop to smell a rose or listen to a bird sing? How many understand that there is a sense to touch beyond the sexual, or fully take in the total beauty of their surroundings? It's a sad thing, I think, and a waste to let the fullness of our senses go to waste.
