-- The Scent of Snow --

John Herlihy

In the surprise of winter lies a secret to know,

In the absence of smell lies the scent of snow.

The trees in the landscape laid stark and bare,

Winter tells a tale of death that seems to stare.

The flakes began to descend as a glorious sight,

Covering winter’s nakedness in a pristine white.

The silence deafening, not a sound to be heard,

Broken at times with the voice of a forlorn bird.

All the dirt and dust of air at first swept away,

Grey clouds there overhead seemingly at play.

The scent of cleanliness and freshness for sure,

In absence of foul smells, what remains is pure.

The secret of snow lies not in sight but in smell,

Recreating all the innocence God could ever tell.

We did not have snow this winter here in New Jersey, but they are predicting the possibility of it now in May. Thanks for your poem, I re-lived the experience of the first snow while reading it.

This is one of your best, and you have many good ones. The fresh scent of new snow is delightful. If I shut my eyes, I can smell it.

I love the musty smell of autumn. Have never thought of the way that snow covers that smell up until the freshness of spring comes. A unique way of looking at it.

Writing about snow in the middle of July makes one wonder why? Perhaps we sometimes yearn for the opposite season. Perhaps this is the reason Hawaii residents vacation in Alaska and the opposite is so. Still, it's nice to read about the smell and the wonder of God's creative wonderland, brilliantly surrounded by the majesty of snow.

It paints a beautiful picture of a white world, far from the hassle of humans. Love it!

So very true. A new snowfall brings a symphony to our senses, one that would be all too easily overlooked if we were, sadly, too busy to notice. Sometimes Mother Nature's greatest gifts are those that appear quietly before us.

Ah, the smelling with the eyes and seeing with the nose. Nature is a marvelous dichotomy of paradoxes, enchanting our imagination if only we pay attention. Beautiful rendering of the cross-relatedness of our senses. Write on Master Poet.
