-- Connected by Sky --

John Herlihy

We hold hands and kiss, look to the stars in fantasy.

We chase fireflies and catch their light, such mystery.

We wonder what the other is doing; we don’t know.

We do know that in wondering, our hearts glow.

Never here, there she is, ten thousand miles away.

I think of her at the same time as she thinks of me.

Here I am, ten thousand miles away from myself.

Always thinking of her and hoping she thinks of me.

I imagine myself there, across the waters with her.

She imagines herself here, across the waters with me.

I look to the heavens to see the bright North Star.

She sees the same bright star in the heavens afar.

There we are, parted by distance, not knowing why.

There we are, brought together, connected by sky.

Longing, romantically written. But you do know there's such a thing as a phone call, where you can always reach out and touch someone.

Sometimes it seems the only thing connecting two lovers far apart is the knowledge that they share the same night time sky. It provides a tangible link between two hearts yearning for one another. A reminder they are not alone in spirit. Beautiful work.

With your profession taking you 10,000 miles away from your original home, loneliness can set in quite easily with no one close to commune with. By juxtaposition, a friend or lover back home may be feeling the same way about losing you for the time you spend overseas at your work.
