-- My North Star --

John Herlihy

The North Star, one of our closest friends,

Night quickly descends as the star ascends.

North Star is the earth’s star, but not mine,

Announcing the night, it feels oh so sublime.

In ebbing darkness, the star shines strength,

In minutes to the hour, we measure its length.

I was lucky to have seen it, where has it been,

Days now gone by as our world edges to its end.

Where is my north star, I do begin to wonder,

This scourge of the earth our hearts plunder.

Where the guiding light that previews hope,

Where the promise of day to lend its scope.

I search in the north, but my star finds me,

Deep within my inner space, there as surety.

The North Star was the first navigation tool ever used. In your poem you're talking about that star as guidance for how we direct our lives. But in places like where I live, human light pollution makes viewing the North Star nearly impossible. But I don't think it foretells a coming end. Wishful thinking about an end they get us there… Where we wish. But it doesn't have to be that way if we find a way we can all see the stars every night to remind us that we are but a small part of the universe. And if we are to get up close and personal with that universe, we must save ourselves from ourselves.

Interesting conundrum play here between the north star and your inner space. One has to think there are many with like dilemmas, but without the skill of a poet to express it. Fine work, again, dear poet.

Of all the stars
in the night
the north star guides us
with it's light.

The North Star, both figuratively and literally, is the most cherished of our personal compasses. Without it we would be, in all manner, lost.
