-- On Being Kind –

John Herlihy

Days have arrived when we can now be kind,

Gone all petty negativity found in our mind.

The virus swept clean our inner world of dust,

Change of routine polished our hearts of rust.

Acts of unkindness we can no longer afford,

While simple kindness brings its own reward.

We pass each other in silent social distancing,

We extend a smile and nod, wisdom in knowing.

Connected by loneliness, in confusion, in grief,

Our brother and sisterhood bring tender relief.

Kind even with myself when I look in the mirror,

Set free of little fears and their lingering terror.

Kindness soothes anxious hearts, we feel its touch,

In bringing us to tears, it costs little but says much.

Very succinct and honest. You've touched on a human quality that I too have tried to communicate in poetic terms and I am reminded by your piece that my wife still to this day will spot a spider, ant or fly in the house, grab a piece of paper, gently scoop up the insect and carry it to the outside. Kindness is a lesson I've learned from her as the master of same. Well penned, John.

There are always random act of kindness, and this virus has brought a little more of that in people, but here in the states, it's led to more division and culture wars. And a lot of that is due to the lack of true leadership in the face of hard and uncertain times.

You share this sentiment with Stephen Lance. Kindness is most needed and often neglected. It does seem that the pandemic has brought out the best in people. Many expressing kind thoughts and especially doing kind deeds. It certainly is a time of reflection.

But in our city, crime has increased. Already, many are desperate for food hard to pay for necessities like rent who have lost their livelihood. There is an increase in domestic violence, percolating in homes where the choices for survival become limited and anger overcomes despair. That is the hidden danger in the peacefulness we see.

Not to discourage your very fine poem. We are one world tied together by this border jumping scourge. Jealous sovereign nations should notice that. Along with their narrow-minded citizens.

Kindness is a reminder that all humanity has a covenant with the unseen. Peace... rlc

Oh, how lovely. Such a wonderfully tender poem. I hope we don't forget the heart lessons that corona has taught us. It would be so sad to lose all that we have gained in terms of heart and spirit.
