-- Gratefulness -–

John Herlihy

I see gratitude as the pillow upon which I rest my head;

No gratitude at end of day leaves me thankless instead.

When I lay myself down in the dead of the midnight hour;

I give thanks to the Lord for the provisions in His power.

We learn from the infant the true meaning of gratitude;

In the simplicity of its smile, not a single iota of servitude.

It goes about the business of day without a word of thanks;

The baby’s body language speaks for itself, even its pranks.

A grateful mind realizes that it owes something in return;

Always owing, nothing owned, no payment ever spurned.

Indebted to those close, indebted to the world and to life;

I speak no pretty words, but my heart with gratitude rife.

What is the gift of life if the heart can be but thankless?

May neither the day nor night pass without gratefulness.

I've been told that gratitude is the sincerest form of prayer. I think your poem illustrates this beautifully.

Your premise here of gratefulness is a principal of worship for me, as since creating the freedom to move our of the bubble of Hollyweird to Oregon, gratefulness is my constant mantra within. Your words are needed now more than ever for any and all those who feel entitled to whatever they think they are entitled to. The fulfillment of needs is inherent in our species. Fulfillment of wants has to be earned... honestly. Words of wisdom

Amazing! I am grateful that you write a poem almost every day. It is comforting and I am sure many on the den are thankful for your daily poems. Some touched lives in the past but all are expressed with much thought and sincerity of the heart. In the end, we all hope God will say, "Well done my good and faithful one." Amen

I love soaking in the pool of gratitude.
Even in the dark the sun is giving.

Yes- a sweet reminder.

Humility and gratitude are first cousins that we should visit often.
Thanks for the reminder.
