-- A Simple Gift of Life --

By John Herlihy

Out of the monotony of the day

Arrives the beauty of the hour.

Out of the memory of time

Shines the beauty of the moment.

A lonesome beauty for sure,

Of a love that may never come true .

On my face the most of me,

The tear that trickles down even more.

When people look to see me,

They see most of me in my face.

They never see the mind,

That roams like a river barge,

Through rough waters that sparkle,

In the beauty of the hour and the day,

With shards of light inside and outside.

Through all the stages of life,

The soul wrapped up in ribbons and a bow.

A gift of life that searches for love.

Our humanity tells us to seek and to find.

A gift to be opened and opened it will be,

Now and once upon some future time.

It took many years of hard work to understand that life, even mine, is a gift. Now I'm glad I put in the effort. Life is, indeed, good.
