-- Beyond Every Door --

John Herlihy

What do we hear beyond the door

What might we see that lies in store

When I knocked on the door of hope,

I heard no reply.

When I knocked on the door of despair,

I heard a sigh.

When I knocked on the door of happiness,

I saw a clown.

When I knocked on the door of sadness,

I saw a frown.

When I knocked on the door of success,

I heard no fame.

When I knocked on the door of failure,

I heard my name.

When I knocked on the door of the past,

I saw only night.

When I knocked on the door of the future,

I saw only light.

Beyond every door an answer lies in wait,

Beyond each and every door lies our fate.

INDEED, THERE IS 'ONE DOOR' THAT MAKES UP FOR THE DISAPPOINTMENTS ENCOUNTERED AT ALL THE OTHERS. ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

A totem of reveals that definitely offers much to think about. One can only wonder what Sheriffs who serve warrants at 6 AM, or social workers who call upon a resident with a history of domestic turmoil, or the grassroots-door-knocker wanting to get the voters out might think as they knock. For all the unknowns, one can only hope for the best.

One could say that what we expect to see when the door is opened is what we will see. It's all a matter of perspective and attitude. A wise poem, here.

My mom says ‘If you can’t say anything nice then don’t say anything’. Sorry mom but under the guise of poetic license I penned these beauties.
