-- Silent Movement --

John Herlihy

Where the sound in movement?

Movement, but no sound.

How to account for this anomaly?

Has the earth run aground?

The earth itself moves in silence,

Its journey far bigger than sound.

How to account for this anomaly?

No limit to outer space, no ground.

Restless shadows move in silence,

Imperceptible, voiceless, no sound.

How to account for this anomaly?

Some things in this world profound.

Phases of the moon but shadow.

Do you hear the old man speak?

How to account for this anomaly?

Never the moon’s sound do we seek.

Those galaxies swirl in silence,

A multitude of suns unfathomed.

How to account for this anomaly?

Celestial music only imagined.

Winter snow falls in silence

Such flurried activity mimics sound.

How to account for this anomaly?

Such whispers speak of mystery.

Mist creeps thru the valley in silence,

Ethereal movement to mimic ghosts.

How to account for this anomaly?

Morning mist the mountain hosts.

My inner voice is ever in silence.

As it whispers, I hear no movement.

How to account for this anomaly?

Surprised, when it speaks, I rejoice.

The universe wrapped in silence,

Ever moving, but never voiceless.

Silent movement speaks eloquently,

Thus, do we account for this anomaly.

IT'S TRUE...SOME 'SILENCES' MAKE THE GREATEST 'MOVEMENTS'. ENJOYED, THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

An interesting thought expressed in this poem questioning all the silence. We are creatures of this earth and its thin atmosphere. We evolved here a barrel range of spectrum that travels in an atmosphere, the only place we can hear it. But thank goodness there are frequencies that we can convert from our set of frequencies to radio waves that can transverse the vastness of space without hardly any molecules to excite.

So for human earshot, your poetic assumption is true. I always have to laugh when I see the spaceships with "motors roaring" as they take off into deep space. As archaic as watching the sparklers fall out the rear end of quaint little minnow shaped aluminum spacecraft in Flash Gordon.

Reminded me of my poem, The Howler Monkey. (Their calls can be heard over a mile away)

There's the adage that silence is golden. I beg to differ. The only true silence is profound deafness and I can't imagine anything being more lonely.

The so called "vacuum" of space is awash with sound. We just can't hear it all, which is a good thing. Surely we would go mad if we were to hear it all.

Enjoyed this. Someone said: "In the silence we find wisdom, revelations, inspirations, and understandings." I agree. A fine poem John. r
