-- THE WEAVE OF A RELATIONSHIP --
John Herlihy
She had grown fond of the certainties,
That he always carried around with him.
His certainties smothered her doubts,
Certainly a very likable thing about him.
No more doubting the day or the hour,
Whether the day cloudy, the mind moody.
He seemed to be free of the outside world.
Nothing seemed to bother him, as if detached.
His burdens never seemed too burdensome;
His worries never seemed too worrisome.
The little happinesses were never so happy;
The little unhappinesses never so unhappy.
Little joys playing with the heart strings.
The feeling of peace a shadow that lingers.
He could cook and he gave her gifts.
He took her hand and touched her back.
The overwhelming sense of confidence
Was his gift of pure insight and return.
Charming without trying to be charming,
Reliable without any overextended relying.
One thing special: he never asked for anything.
In giving, he never expected anything in return.
Trust your instincts was the advice he gave her,
Whatever you do, never give yourself unfairly away.
What he knew complemented what she didn’t know.
What she knew complemented his lack of knowing.
After all, sometimes people just know certain things.
Indeed, sometimes people just don’t know things,
The interweave in a relationship made things right,
After waiting for all those bitter years in patience.
She now knew that the waiting had come to an end.
Now there was no need to rush through the day.
In the luxury of the hour, she had time to pay attention.
She looked up to see sparrows or were they swallows.
At first, she thought, then said aloud: What are they?
She knew very well he would know the difference.
He looked up, but he didn’t really need to see.
He also knew that he didn’t really need to tell her.
The birds were gone by the time they were seen.
If they were never there, he might have seen them.
He said nothing, but whispered love sounds into her ear.
She frowned, then smiled, when she knew what he meant.
