-- Poetic Love --

John Herlihy

The words never lie in street gutters,

Wind-blown like scattered leaves.

They gather in a place more profound,

To settle down in their ease.

There in the well of the heart,

Are the poetic words drawn.

There where our deepest emotions lie,

Are the poetic verses born.

And from that dark sacred cavern,

Into the world the mounting wave will reach.

To break upon the shore of the world’s heart,

All of humanity to beseech.

Seeking to find the truths of the world,

The poet steps out of the blackness.

Exposing the vanities of the world,

As he seeks his own brightness.

From the heart of the one to the heart of the multitude,

The bud of poetic love revealed in flowering plenitude.

For so many in search of that love, your words should arrest consciousness that love is not easily discovered, but when found, is far more than most understand... steeped as they are in sex, flesh, looks, and OBJECT possession. Oh, my. How adolescent.

A poet pulls back the veil from his most private musings, but never removes it completely. Poetry is an art form that is capable of exposing ones highest joys, deepest sorrows, or most private struggles. Poetry always asks the reader to look upon, to perceive, to feel, to understand another point of view, and to never take for granted what they think about the world and its inhabitants. Nicely written John. Enjoyed. rlc

Many of us, poets, write from our hearts. Our pens are mightier than the sword. We can wave our pens and decide where we want to go. We can emerge ourselves from darkness into light, and sadness into happiness! Well done, John!
