-- Yearning --

John Herlihy

Sometimes I find myself yearning,

Yearning for something, yearning for more.

There, deep in my heart, something burning,

Something beyond myself, something to adore.

Yearning to escape, to breathe deep and free,

Not just to hope, but to make hope come true .

Yearning to listen to silence, the invisible to see,

Not just to dream, but to see the dream through.

Already I see so much to have within my reach,

To be conscious, to desire, to love, and to know.

To a greater power, there in the distance to beseech,

To escape my limitations, into the unknown to grow.

I feel intensely the magic, the questions, the mystery,

Discontented at a standstill, always yearning for more.

Yearning extended. as rays from a sun, my solitary plea,

Yearning a steady flame in a heart willing to implore.

Not yearning for a distant future that may never come,

Yearning for some distant future that has already begun.

OH, JOHN...I TOTALLY ENDEAR THE LAST TWO LINES. TO HAVE SURRENDERED AND YEARN FOR THAT WHICH IS SET BEFORE US...THAT WHICH WE CANNOT, NOR WANT TO...ESCAPE FROM, IS TO EXPERIENCE 'A TASTE' OF THE UNIMAGINABLE GIFT, THAT SURELY AWAITS US...ETERNAL LIFE! SO APPRECIATED AND ENJOYED. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

I can see so much of myself in this poem. I, too, am always yearning. Perhaps it is part of the human condition.

A lovely, meaningful, and thought-awakening poem, John. Coincidentally, I have a poem posted here at AD entitled "Yearnings" which I wrote a number of years ago.

As you proffer, there's a matter of perspective involved. The mind can calculate, but the spirit yearns. One might say that spiritual yearning is the homesickness of the soul. Thanks for sharing. r

Without yearning we wouldn't progress all. So I'm glad that fire burns enough to write this beautiful poem that shows the way everyone should live. Seeking what's next even if we don't know what it is.

Very compelling reveal. You are someone who continually provides the words and thoughts that reach into our inner being and arrests what often are like-feelings that have lain dormant too long. Thank you for posting these pieces of both principal and spiritual value.
