-- We Don’t Know Why --

John Herlihy

How didn’t I know until I came to know?

How didn’t I miss a thing until I came to miss it?

How did I overlook a thing until I came to notice it?

How did you hide so much until you finally revealed it?

How did the sun rise without my witnessing it?

How did the day come to an end without my filling it?

How did twilight happen without my caring about it?

How did night fall without my trembling about it?

We play at being ignorant when we ought to know.

We don’t appreciate things until they are no longer there.

We ignore things that we should take notice of.

We don’t see the signs when a secret is kept from us.

A curtain drawn that will never be undrawn.

A door found locked in a familiar room.

Secrets have been kept never to be revealed.

Promises often set forth that are made to be broken.

Explanations rendered that are never understood.

Premonitions harbored in their safe port.

People ready to lie without giving it away.

Laughing to oneself when no one else knows why.

Mysteries remain mysteries and we don’t know why.

Stay focused, centered and positive, on this we can rely.

Still Living on my Feet by Tichaona Chinyelu

Still Living on my Feet is the follow up to Tichaona Chinyelu’s first book, In the Whirlwind, which was rooted in a sense of hard-hitting revolutionary black love. However, in this sophomore effort, Tichaona brings the revolutionary essence from deep
