-- The Curse of Our Beliefs --
John Herlihy
Beware the wistful beliefs that we ponder;
We don’t really know them, so we wonder,
The child holds the butterfly only to feel awe,
Wrapped in the beauty of a belief that she saw.
Premonitions drawn hastily from a spider’s web;
Woven into the texture of our destiny instead.
Ah, but the fabric of our lives is woven thin;
We wear a brave face, innerly we feel grim.
Our birth and death surround us in a cocoon;
Its mystery adorns the corners of an inner room.
To live and to die into the depths of oblivion,
An eternal repose without any hope of reunion.
To live and to die into a life created new forever;
The soul lives on, from God’s rope never to sever.
The curse lies in the fact that we will never know;
If we don’t awaken into the gift God will bestow.
