-- Flying in Unison --

John Herlihy

I saw them swoop down out of the blue,

A unity perfect that I never before knew.

The birds caught my attention, held there;

Filled with feelings of wonder, I only stare.

And the will of the flock soared high,

Harmony against the blue plate of sky.

Their harmony of mind soared in unison;

My heart then fluttered, on my face a grin.

Swooping left and right, then up or down;

They knew where they go, above ground.

And the will of the flock soared high,

Harmony against the blue plate of sky.

How do they do this, how do they know?

They fly with the subtle mystery of snow.

A knowledge of kind, drawn from instinct,

Their feathers in wind, taken to the brink.

And the will of the flock soared high,

Harmony against the blue plate of sky.

As I sit in wonder, admiring their beauty,

I marvel at nature expressing such mystery.

Oh, that humanity knew their own mystery

So they could soar together in such beauty.

The will of the human flock to soar high,

Harmony against the blue heaven of sky.

I love to watch birds flocking on the wing. Your poem captures the event wonderfully.

Birds, dinosaurs all, have evolved not only to get off the ground and stay there, but remarkable balance in the air and navigation to the point of flying in formation to avoid collisions that would otherwise occur.

As I read, my thoughts turned immediately to the flight of blackbirds, who orchestrate amazing patterns as they fly together in some kind of joyous love of flying. I used to see them do that when they came to to roost at night in the evening at the state park nearby that I visited whenever I could.

Your final stanza is a wish that we could all synchronize like those flocks of birds and get things done. Perhaps we have become too independent, too intelligent, to do that. For we know what simply following the herd does… It often succumbs into becoming an angry mob.

You Look FatCalgary by RickthePoetWarrior

Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
