MIRROR POEMS
-- The Night Owns Him --
John Herlihy
There to be taken,
With feelings forsaken.
Fear fills the mind,
Seeing nothing, blind.
Bounded by mystery,
As if fleeing eternity.
Premonitions of danger abound,
Alien voices are all around.
The shell of silence cracked open,
The hoot of an owl dangers betoken.
Whispers and cries of the wind,
A moth on parchment pinned.
Witness all in a flash of light,
The deer in me fears the night.
-- He Owns the Night --
John Herlihy
There for the taking,
No single emotion forsaking.
A sense of awe fills the mind,
Seeing everything, blind.
Unbounded by mystery,
As if facing eternity.
Intriguing possibilities abound,
Beckoning voices all around.
The shell of silence cracked open,
The hoot of the owl promises betoken.
The howling cries of the wind,
The yellow teeth of wolves grinned.
Witness all in a flash of light,
The wolf in me owns the night.
