-- A Worthy Tale --

John Herlihy

Not all the world’s possessions,

Will ever fill the well of our soul.

Not all our thought’s obsessions,

Will close a circle, make us whole.

Still, of all the world’s possessions,

Some will come into our able hands.

Some of our thought’s obsessions,

Add to a circle without reprimands.

Not all our fragile life emotions,

Will fill the caverns of our heart.

Not all our whims and fantasies,

Will shatter us or break us apart.

Still, of all our fragile life emotions,

Some will offer us what we need.

Some of our whims and fantasies,

Will our deepest inner urges feed.

Not all of life’s joys and sorrows,

Will fill the measure of our lives.

Not all yesterdays or tomorrows,

Will ensure a single life survives.

Still, of all life’s joys and sorrows,

Some will enable us to fully grow.

All the yesterdays and tomorrows,

Will ensure today a day we know.

Not all of our hopes and dreams,

To be fulfilled in our lives as true .

Not all of our plans and schemes,

Will reflect truth in what we knew.

Still, some of our hopes and dreams,

Will be fulfilled in our lives as true .

As some of our plans and schemes,

Reflect all the truth we ever knew.

If not all of our destiny can we bear,

The good of our destiny tips the scale.

If all of our actions become a prayer,

Then life itself becomes a worthy tale.

My personal belief is that prayer as it is taught (as the answer to all things) diminishes our true purpose, namely, to experience all that life has to offer and to surmount each obstacle that comes our way. We pray, not for things, but for comfort or the stamina to see us through. The rest is up to us. How else can we grow? But I am not a preacher, not really a poet. I like your outlook even though it lets us off the hook too often. It is sheer beauty from the inside looking out.
