-- The Rough Edges of Memory --

John Herlihy

Time sands down the rough edges of our memory;

What really happened takes on an air of mystery.

I recall childhood and wonder who was this child;

Tongue-tied and shy, two older brothers ran wild.

Much that happened has disappeared in the mist;

Poignant memories still clear make up a short list.

Not a matter of choice, they have a will of their own;

If the soul has threads, they are into its fabric sewn.

Bad memories linger, always painful to recollect;

Good memories linger, with power to resurrect.

The bad memories return in flashes,  and I stare;

The good memories return in flashes I gladly bear.

Finally, the rough edges of memory turn smooth;

Their fleeting message can restless hearts soothe.

WHAT A BLESSING IT IS TO REACH AN AGE...A PLACE...WHERE 'WISDOM' FLOWS SO FREELY. AND 'ALL' MEMORIES GOOD AND BAD ARE HOMOGENIZED TO FORM A SOOTHING MIXTURE, THAT IS...A HEALING...FOR MY ROUGH-EDGE MEMORIES. AND SUDDENLY THERE APPEARS 'A PURPOSE' FOR IT ALL. AMEN. KUDOS AND THANK YOU. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

Faded memories is like losing yourself over time... unnoticed. And those memories you would like to forget... haunting!

Enjoyed reading this.

There is now much evidence to suggest that what we do remember
within our memories isn’t very accurate at all...
We have the choice of selection...
A nod to bad...more reflection and celebration
on the good...

Some memories we resurrect more often then others. Some arrive on their own accord, some we pluck from our collective bouquet. This is why as we grow old we grow more quiet and more enriched by our memories,

Totally relate. I've been dealing with many troubling memories since my Father died Feb this year. Some of them wring me dry. Thank God for good memories, those that energize and focus us. Enjoyed this John. Thanks. rlc

Finding a way to deal with memories as we age is a notable challenge. Accepting the bad with the good is the only way to keep the doldrums of aging away... as your poem posits.
