-- Love That Lasts --
John Herlihy
No true accounting for a love that lasts,
Love an emotion made of multiple parts.
Love waxes and wanes as does the moon,
First a hard heart, later romantic swoon.
His love crests as a wave spent on shore,
Her love is broken apart at its very core.
Some love can sweep us far beyond Mars,
Other love finds protection in closed jars.
She always wished she was good enough,
He always feared he wasn’t good enough.
He knew that she knew, since they wed,
She knew that he knew, both never said.
They didn’t have to say so if they agreed,
They need not to say so if they disagreed.
They didn’t have to say if they felt loved,
They need not to say if they felt unloved.
Love did last; silence held them together,
Lit by candle flame and light as a feather.
