-- What Is Time –
John Herlihy
What is time,
But a gathering of seconds.
What is time,
By a rhythm nobody reckons.
What is time,
But a straight arrow on the fly.
What is time,
But a fleet fox on the sly.
What is time,
But an illusion that before us yearns.
What is time,
But a bridge that behind us always burns.
What is time,
but a metronome that has no start.
What is time,
but a beating of the human heart.
What is time,
but a reality that always lies.
What is time,
but a death that always dies.
What is time,
but a future that promises to exist.
What is time,
but a past that will nevermore exist.
What is time,
But a year in a slow afternoon.
What is time,
But flowing sands in a shifting dune.
What is time,
But a history of midnights and noons.
What is time,
But the ultimate healer of wounds.
What is time
But the eternal present
What is time
But steps in eternity’s ascent
What is time,
but the measure of the man.
What is time,
but an eternal measure in God’s hand.

Time is merely a construct that explains our human view of day, night, the seasons and their rather precise accounting for day and night, and the seasons of the year by breaking these repeating cycles down into segments that can be verified. Without time and a measure of reading time, appointments would be missed between people, and those predicting the future would not have any time frame to hang onto.
