-- One Story to Tell --
John Herlihy
I have one poem to write,
And I keep rewriting it.
A poem of the human plight,
And I keep reciting it.
I have one story to tell,
And I keep retelling it.
A story to cast a magic spell,
Dawns, days, dusks filling it.
The poetic images feel sublime,
They pull us into here and now.
Universal symbols yours and mine,
In touching us, they fill us somehow.
The narrative stream may change,
With no control over what happens.
Events our moods to rearrange,
Full of color, soft texture, patterns.
The story goes out into the world,
Where it takes on a life of its own.
Inside the crusty oyster shell, a pearl,
Over days, weeks, years, slowly grown.
May this story find some form of merit.
My story but a tale of the human spirit.

Therefore, we are the most diverse of all creatures. But I would venture to cause the most intelligent when we seem to be destroying our own nest of great variety and experience for something more mechanical and predictable. Such is our drive to find evermore technological solutions to simple problems, making them much more complicated. For example, the nuclear dilemma that we proceed on with no solution in sight.

Your verses certainly awaken thought and imagination, John. I suppose it depends on how each reader interprets them but for me, I keep hoping for the human spirit to grow, to evolve, and for all to get along and be one so as to save this world before it is too late. Love and peace,

And the words that spring forth and are captured
within the hearts of each of us are given
individual meaning, and thus take on a life of their own...
Ultimately we have no control, being merely caretakers
of these strings of words that are given freedom to become
meaningful in whichever way is most appropriate...
