-- Up Against the Moon --
John Herlihy
What are we when in silhouette before the moon,
That pale night wanderer beaming reflected light.
Every night to traverse the darkened heavens,
A faithful companion orbiting our planet Earth.
Whether scythe or simitar, cutting thru night,
Laying waste to darkness with soft moonbeams.
The light cast across mountains, rivers, forests,
The sad eye of the old man has witnessed it all.
The brief span of recorded history but a breath,
A breath of solitary life of our mysterious moon.
There I stand in moonlight, in silhouette to its glow,
Breathing its mystery, revealing its guarded secrets.
Like the moon, I too will reflect its borrowed light,
However brief and solitary, illuminating the night.

I feel drawn in to the landscape you
described, and to the subtlety
of Mother Moon’s celestial charms…
Diana…
Although long dead as a sub planet, the moon is essential to life on earth in many ways.
Long live the moon, and may we always revel in its eerie, pale light!
