-- The Limits of Infinity --
John Herlihy
Never two mysteries have been so mysterious;
Eternity and infinity roam our minds imperious.
Two prominent concepts we can’t rightly take in;
When they knock and timidly enter, our minds spin.
Infinity yawns and we see but limitless space;
Our questions swim drunkenly in this amazing place.
A single point extends into an endless encircling line;
Wherever we may turn, our hearts for an end pine.
How do we handle no horizon, no cliff, no edge;
In the natural order of the universe, we feel the pledge.
Where is the promise to be found in infinite space?
Endless realms of nothingness offering very little grace.
Even darkness has its limits, there in the dead of night,
That steals away as a thief with the coming of dawn’s light.
Nor can light wax limitless, being swallowed by the night;
The ascent of the solar orb makes sunrise a blessed sight.
Touched by the heavens, the horizon kissed by the sun;
Time’s wheel ever turning as another glorious day is won.
We feel comfortable with time’s end, know it too has a death;
We inhale, we exhale, knowing full well the limits of breath.
The world to go on turning, unfettered by angels, forever;
Similar to falling into a dark abyss and landing, never.
What is an eternity, at times, but the act of sitting still,
To hold oneself in calm repose by a deliberate act of will.
Give me a life with beginning and end, my heart will quicken;
Give me eternity and infinity, and my heart will feel stricken.

I'm very comfortable with them being unattainable. So I focus on the practical, the attainable. The small steps, one step at a time. The first step on the moon, and then on Mars. With better instruments looking deeper into the universe with each generation. But everything is small step leading to the ultimate conquering the fear over what these things, unattainable things, really are.
