-- A Stranger Once More --

John Herlihy

Not a stranger anymore, or am I still?

I have finally retired and come home.

Lived years in other countries,

Other countries, other worlds.

I lived many years among strangers,

Strangers who quickly became friends.

To rely on the good will of strangers,

You soon learn new meaning of friends.

Learned languages, ate spicy foods,

Visited places no one ever sees.

Places people have wanted to see,

Ancient, historical, forgotten, sacred places.

I have visited tombs of potentates,

The high and mighty now laid low.

Suleiman the Magnificent in ash dust,

Dressed in cobwebs amid scattered leaves.

I have wept at the tomb of saints,

Their spirit presence there as perfume.

The tears from surges of ecstasy,

Wrapped in an embrace never assumed.

I moved from country to country,

As a restless wind always on the move.

Settled down in alien cultures, sought bounty,

A stranger ready to be someone’s friend.

I have wandered at night in the desert,

Slept under a canopy of twinkling stars.

Snakes, spiders, scorpions as companions,

A stranger in the wild, with night doors ajar.

When I left a country, I left my heart behind,

Time to move on, willing anywhere to venture.

To become again a stranger of another kind

A piece of me, the stranger, seeking adventure,

As an old man, I now return to my roots,

To live out my final days in my home country.

I have now left my friends of the past behind,

At home, I find myself a stranger once more.

What a life you have led. Always a stranger, but making friends wherever you make your bed. Many stories in such a life, I both feel a sense of mortality in your words and a sense of the timeless. Beautifully written. Journeys take us as far as we must go, our heart will open and break a thousand times, but we must always return home or die trying.

YOU ARE RETIRED, JOHN! I DIDN'T NOTICE UNTIL I CAME TO THIS SHARING AND WAS LEAD TO RE-READ YOUR BIO. I, FOR ONE...AM GLAD THAT YOU ARE HOME TO STAY, SAFE. FLORIDA IS A COVID HOT=SPOT, SO BE WISE AND AWARE. I KNOW BEING SETTLED IS DIFFICULT FOR ONE WITH A TRAVELING SPIRIT TO TAKE...BUT, ALAS JOHN...ALL THINGS BY GOD'S WILL, AMEN. I AM PRAYING THAT, PERHAPS, THE 'STRANGER'...WHO HAS ACQUIRED SO MUCH KNOWLEDGE, WHICH HE SHARES IN HIS SO FINE, ONE-OF-A-KIND POETIC WAY... WILL FIND HIMSELF MORE 'AT HOME', WITH TIME. ENJOYED IMMENSELY, THANK YOU FOR SHARING. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS.

Your journey through life has indeed been full of rewards and discoveries. Now that you are retired, the reflections of past realities become real once more in your poetry. Write on.

I hope you don't mind if I envy your travel experience. And the way that it broadened your perspective on the world. Especially, when you found friends in strangers, something that I have experienced, too. For those who read this and don't trust strangers, they have missed out on the better part of life.

When many are finding retirement abroad, it is interesting that you have returned home. If not at your traditional home, but one of the premier retirement hotspots in this country that I can't afford to live in.

I encourage everyone reading this to read your travel logs of your many adventures. They are so beautifully written and cover so many places off the beaten path that is a treasure trove to read them.

Right [write] on…

Ron

So.... Miami is your home now? I still can't get the collapse of that condo unit out of my thoughts. What a horror that was. I related to this John, because I too traveled the world for 25 years in my teens 20's and 30's. Mostly with the military and in the music business. One of the beauties of living in Southern California (our home) is the nearness of the mountains, the high desert, and the beach. Thanx 4 sharing.... rlc

Your words make me think of what it's been like for me in the years following my dad's retirement from the military, when we moved around so often, and the nearly twenty years following, when I continued to move around on my own. Though I was always searching for my place to belong, and despite the fact that I eventually found it, I have still ended up back where it all started, where I am a stranger in so many ways. And where I am never at peace.
