-- Kinds of Silence --

John Herlihy

Pure silence we all realize,

As sheer absence of sound.

Silence teaches us otherwise,

Many kinds of silence abound.

Silence an eternal lode

At home in outer space.

The stars speak in code,

In that mysterious place.

Absolute silence,

There in falling snow.

Not a breath, not a whisper,

Surely a silence with halo.

Sacred silence,

Felt in the heart sincere.

At home in the soul,

An aura held most dear.

Holy silence,

There in the church nave.

Floating as incense smoke,

Rising wave upon wave.

Dumb silence,

Found In lack of words.

Pure auditory solitude,

In repose with sleeping birds.

Broken silence,

Not true silence at all.

the sigh of the wind,

holds us more in thrall.

Dawn silence,

Night escapes in disarray.

The started fawn in compliance,

When silence has so much to say.

Night silence,

Darkness utters a prayer.

Night cries feel chilling,

Some animal in despair.

Stone silence,

Casts a mysterious spell.

Ancient mountains endure,

Never their secret to tell.

Peaceful silence,

The hush of falling snow.

Creating a wonderland,

Only winter can bestow.

Human silence,

No need for any word.

Neither truth, nor falsehood,

Only the silence heard.

THIS IS TRUE. NOW IT TAKES A WISE PERSON TO DIFFERENTIATE THESE SILENCES...TO KNOW WHEN AND HOW TO LISTEN TO THE MESSAGES BEING GIVEN BY THE SOUNDS OF SILENCE. THANK YOU, JOHN. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATION

wow John, you make me develop a new appreciation for silence, after I read this. Nicely penned , it flows right into my heart, as I sit here silent. Well done, have a wonderful weekend, dear friend :)

You have described the sounds of silence so many different ways. I love silence for two of my favorite activities: thinking and sleeping. Fortunately, I'm losing my hearing so I'm not hearing half of the sounds out there. Unfortunately, I'm losing my hearing so I'm beginning do not hear what half of people are saying. But perhaps, only the other half is all I need. ;-)

I heard Simon and Garfunkel as I read this. I never realized how many different ways there are to describe silence.

If only more listeners would hear the silence you describe, the world would have a better chance of knowing itself. I've often wondered about the dogs I've owned whether their ears were as keen at enjoying silence as they enjoyed the sound of a can opener or the lifting of a leash from its hook, et al.
